What do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopaths are holistic practitioners that treat a wide range of diseases and disorders including lower back pain, neck pain, tennis elbow and many others. These are generally diseases and disorders that affect the musculoskeletal system.

Osteopathy and Lower Back Pain

Osteopaths are able to diagnose and treat low back pain. They will diagnose through physical examinations, observation and their highly developed sense of palpation. If necessary they may also refer the patient for a scan, X-ray or other medical assessments. They can also treat the low back pain using a variety of mobilisation and manipulation techniques and perhaps even other therapies such as acupuncture. They are also be able to give advice on your posture and how to ease or avoid further back pain. Most osteopaths have experience with Pilates, the Alexander Technique, Yoga and many other exercise disciplines.

Neck Pain

Another disorder that osteopaths treat is neck pain. They will begin by diagnosing the cause of your neck pain – whether it is caused by the spinal joints, injured muscles or tendons. After a diagnosis has been made the osteopath will then be able to treat it with gentle manipulations, massage, acupuncture and also offer advice on how you can treat your own shoulder pain with correct posture and perhaps general lifestyle advice.

Tennis Elbow and Osteopathy

Tennis elbow is caused by an injury to the tendons on the outside of the bone on the arm. Osteopathy is able to diagnose tennis elbow and also treat it using soft tissue manipulation and other osteopathic techniques.

Other Disorders Treated by Osteopathy

These are just a few of the main disorders treated using osteopathy but others include sciatica, whiplash, headaches and migraines. Shoulder pain is another common problem treated by osteopaths.

Osteopaths will use specific manipulative and mobilising techniques to treat these disorders and may also employ other techniques such as acupuncture, or refer patients for other treatment options where they consider this necessary,

If you are suffering from low back pain, neck pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain or other musculoskeletal disorders then an osteopath may be just what you need to help treat your disorder naturally and reach peak performance once more.
